Volunteer Opportunity Description

 

Friends Make a Difference Mentoring Program is a youth mentoring program that is helping to improve the lives of youth in the Lakes community through the Chisago Lakes, Forest Lake, and North Branch school districts at 14 mentoring sites. The program’s goal is to facilitate healthy development of at-risk youth by providing adult mentors who can act as a friend, provide personal and professional advice, and lend an ear.

The mentor will be responsible for mentoring youth ages 6-17 throughout the school year. The mentor is a dependable, consistent friend who is a nurturer of possibilities. The mentor & mentee will meet for one hour, twice a month during the school year over the student’s lunch period. During this time relationships are developed through organized and planned activities by support staff. Mentors will be matched with youth of like backgrounds and interests.

Responsibilities:

  • Be a positive adult role model and dependable friend that will help nurture possibilities
  • Uphold YMCA Code of Conduct
  • Follow all procedures and policies of the School District and the YMCA

Requirements

 
  • Minimum age of 18
  • 8 month commitment (Oct-May) spending a minimum of 2 hours per month with mentee: Meet for one hour, twice a month during school year over the student’s lunch period (varies from 11a – 2p)
  • Dedicated to the Y mission and philosophy
  • Volunteer application
  • Face-to-face interview
  • Criminal Background Check
  • Reference Check
  • Signed Code of Conduct
  • Completion of online New Volunteer Orientation (NVO)
  • Successful completion of a 4-hour mentor training
