Volunteer - Small Groups Facilitator: Journey to Freedom

Volunteer Opportunity Description


A Journey to Freedom Small Groups Facilitator works with a co-facilitator to engage participants in honest dialogue about the areas of their life in which they are seeking Christ-centered transformational change. Facilitators act as a model participant for the group by sharing openly, adhering to and holding others accountable to group guidelines, and encouraging participants outside of group time.


  • Lead the group through the curriculum (Facilitators are not teachers/counselors/preachers, but model participants)
  • Willingness to be vulnerable in sharing a personal journey of struggle, or achievement in the past or present
  • Maintain the safety of the group by enforcing group guidelines
  • Encourage participants through prayer; send weekly check-in emails to encourage group members through their reading/journey
  • Execute any handouts, rosters, or general hospitality needs of the group
  • Recruit participants for the group through meaningful relationship and advocacy within and outside of the YMCA

Physical Demands

  • May require lifting tables and chairs, transporting supplies, and sitting for several hours at a time



Qualifications - Required

  • Minimum age of 18
  • Personal connection to the Principles of the YMCA mission statement
  • Participation in a Journey to Freedom course, or completion of the book “Journey to Freedom” by Scott Reall
  • Completion of 8-hour Journey to Freedom facilitator training (offered 2x/year)
  • 8-week commitment per group led. 90-min weekly commitment for group facilitation, plus additional time for follow-up email to the group, planning next session, and prayer for your group

  • Reference Check
  • Signed Code of Conduct
  • Completion of online New Volunteer Orientation (NVO)

Qualifications - Preferred

  • Experience facilitating small groups or working with individuals in a helping context
  • Referral from a current Journey to Freedom facilitator
