The Café Manager is the in-house champion and local leader responsible for the overall operation of the Café in community-based Housing Works Bookstore Café & Bar.  


Our ideal Café Manager is – first and foremost – an ambassador for Housing Works, prioritizing customer service over all other tasks. You must know, embody and actively communicate our Mission Statement, be active in the local community, and work to create an environment and culture that is reflective of the Housing Works Community Values. 


The Café Manager must possess an entrepreneurial spirit with a talent for using existing resources to maximize revenue and profit. 


In this role, you will lead the training and development of the Café team, empower employees to work together to reach organizational goals and objectives, and serve as their number one cheerleader and coach.



Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Create and maintain a welcoming environment for volunteers and customers, exhibiting stellar customer service

• Meet Café's daily/monthly revenue goals with a keen eye on expenses (keeping COG’s to 25% of revenue and supply costs to 5% of revenue)

• Regularly test and implement new initiatives in the café and cross-departmentally to boost sales and cut costs

• Preparing fresh food & drinks daily, paying attention to event schedule, and training/supervising staff and volunteers to do the same

• Developing and seasonally updating in-house and catering menu/s

• Setting up Café during the day, and transitioning the Bar in the evening hours, in a manner to entice customers

• Ordering food/supplies and managing vendor relationships and maintaining monthly inventory

• Maintaining all Café areas to DOH codes

• Scheduling, training, and supervising staff and volunteers, and working with Volunteer Program Coordinator to recruit Café volunteers

• Spearheading Café promotions including advertising daily specials on social media, creating flyers, etc

• Coordinating Café repairs with Facilities and Bookstore General Manager

• Working with Executive Director and other Bookstore leadership on strategic plans to improve business and workflow processes across all departments

• Other duties related to Café, Bookstore and special events as required 

Minimum Requirements


Housing Works Ambassador

• Participate in at least one direct action per quarter aimed at ending the twin crises of homelessness and HIV/AIDS, must participate in a minimum of four actions per year.

• Know the Housing Works’ Mission Statement and goals and be able to inform and discuss with customers.


Minimum Education/Experience Required

• Commitment to excellent customer service

• Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written), interpersonal and team-oriented skills

• Self-starting, self-motivating mindset 

• Food service and/or bar management experience required

• Culinary training preferred

• Food handler’s license required

• Barista experience required

• Computer literacy

• Ability to communicate effectively and manage large and diverse volunteer staff and volunteers

• High School diploma or the equivalent, Bachelor’s Degree preferred


Key Performance Indicators

• % to sales plan (revenue)

• % to budget (expenses)

• Total revenue after 5pm 

• 1 new initiative tested each month


Physical Demands/Working Conditions

• Flexibility in schedule; including weekends and holidays; required to work over 40 hours a week as necessary

• Occasionally required to stand, walk, kneel, and bend for long periods of time, including the ability to go up and down stairs frequently

• Occasionally required to lift a minimum of 40 lbs.

• Frequently communicates (exchanges information, converse with, express oneself) with volunteers, vendors, supervisors, clients, and community at large

• Excellent verbal and written communications skills, articulations and instruction of policy and procedure.  Coach volunteers in accordance with organizational policy and best practices.  

• Occasionally exchange information in communication with individuals who are agitated, confrontational or difficult patrons from a variety of socio-economic, cultural and religious backgrounds

• Occasionally required to traverse public transportation to attend meetings and/or participant in presentations and training seminars

• This position may not be performed remotely
