Every day, children die as a result of drowning. The Y can save lives. You can help. We are taking applications for Safety Around Water Leaders.

The Safety Around Water leader coordinates and supervises operations of the community water safety initiative, Safety Around Water. At the Y, we believe everyone should have the chance to learn how to stay safe around water. Drowning poses a considerable risk for youth and adults, especially those from underserved populations. Drowning deaths are preventable.

As the Safety Around Water leader, this person is responsible for directly supervising a Safety Around Water team of approximately 7 lifeguards and swim instructors. He/She maintains records, schedules staff, ensures proper pool safety, teaches, and lifeguards as necessary. Provides staff with feedback, coaching, guidance, and support. Applicant will provide day-to-day supervision of the Safety Around Water program including scheduling and supervision of lifeguards and instructors to ensure coverage meets association guidelines and standards; teaches classes and lifeguards as necessary; communicates and coordinates with the apartment managers about scheduling, pool maintenance, curriculum and upcoming events; leads weekly in-services that are positive and impactful;  interacts regularly with Safety Around Water team, AAGD apartment managers & Know Before You Go partners.                                                                                                                                                                           



  • Applicant must be 21years of age or older.
  • Must have excellent customer service and communication. 
  • Ability to make sound judgments, and transfer learning from one situation to another. 
  • Ability to establish goals, clarify tasks, plan work, and actively participate in best practices.
  • Ability to meet or exceed goals and deliver a high-quality experience for participants, volunteers, and staff.
  • Must have the ability to work with people of different backgrounds, abilities, opinions, and perceptions.
  • Must have a current state approved first-aid certification; CPR for the Professional Rescuer; Lifeguard certification; YMCA Swimming Instructor, or equivalent;
  • Two years of college education in a related field preferred.   
  • Experience as a supervisor is preferred but not required.
