This position is not eligible for benefits and is grant funded.  Continued employment is contingent upon further grant funding.

This position is part-time, nonexempt, unclassified and covered under the Superior Court Employee Handbook.  This is an employee-at-will position.

Hours vary; up to 25 hours/week; majority of hours during academic school year; some summer hours required

Under the direction of the Director of Education, the Check and Connect Program Mentor is responsible for mentoring students in the Check and Connect Program, in order to increase school engagement and graduation rates throughout the Allen County community.


  • Works directly and collaboratively with a caseload of individual students and their parents, district service units, administrators, school site staff, and community service providers to implement comprehensive and inclusive strategies that address school success, engagement and completion of high school graduation requirements for students at risk of disengagement.
  • Responsible for tracking levels of engagement of target students, documenting results, and completing intervention sheets, in order to assess the number and types of absences, skips, suspensions, and grades/credits earned.
  • Maintains records of students’ attendance, grades, and behavior and provides regular feedback to students, and their families.
  • Refers students to appropriate community services, provides students and families with information on community services, and develops community agency relationships.
  • Works as a liaison to facilitate communication and promote problem-solving both at the individual student level and between families and schools.
  • Attends staff meetings, school meetings, IEP meetings, and other relevant meetings, such as suspension re-entry meetings as needed.
  • Facilitates student/parent transportation for dropout prevention/school completion related activities.
  • Conducts occasional home/site visits for communication and accountability purposes.
  • Works collaboratively with schools to define and outline the role of staff in improving student participation, performance, and success for individual students identified as high risk for disengagement.
  • Assists students in navigating school choices and decisions such as class schedule and diploma options.
  • Helps students and families set personal educational goals and targets strategies to meet student needs.
  • Travels to various public school buildings located within Allen County.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements and Working Conditions



  • Associate’s Degree in Social Services, Psychology, Education or related field and at least one year of experience working with adolescents
  • Valid Driver’s License to drive to and from various public school buildings and student homes
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong computer skills with the ability to use Microsoft Office and other job related software
  • Knowledge of local community and educational resources
  • Knowledge of local school districts and local juvenile courts is preferred


The Check and Connect Program Mentor works both in and out of an office setting with frequent sitting and the ability to move about freely, some lifting of up to twenty pounds, bending, pushing/pulling loads, reaching over head, kneeling, monitoring equipment, detailed inspection and proofreading. Frequent typing and attention to detail is required.  The Check and Connect Program Mentor is sometimes exposed to extreme temperatures and noise and has frequent contact with youth and their families who may be aggressive, violent and/or difficult.
