Purpose of Job


This is a professional and skilled position that involves manual work. The position involves, seasonal color beds, irrigation systems, trees, ornamental shrub beds and trails within the park system. Work involves planning and executing the beautification plans for the parks and includes landscaping projects performed within the framework of good horticultural practices and master landscaping plans. To perform technical tasks relative to assigned areas and utilize a computerized maintenance management system to track work performance. 


II. Essential Job Duties


  • Performs a variety of seasonal duties, which may include occasionally mow areas with commercial mowers; edging and trimming roadway medians, shoulders and along City sidewalks. Spreading grass seed, fertilizers, and straw; apply pesticides; laying sod, spreading mulch, creating seasonal color beds; pruning trees and shrubbery; planting and maintaining seasonal color beds and landscaped areas.


  • Utilize a computerized maintenance management system (Infor), plan prioritize, receive and assign work for crews and review work of individual landscape workers responsible for landscaping maintenance.


  • Creates bedding and landscape plans; determines planting scheme, selects and purchases plants, bulbs, purchases seeds; transplants, waters, and fertilizes plants; computes, orders, and makes substitutions for all required quantities of plants, seeds, and other materials and equipment required to perform the work.


  • Maintains a wide variety of plants using proper horticulture techniques. At times, must use proper soil grading practices to establish a safe walkable surface and minimize any erosion. Assists the Urban Forestry Division in the maintenance of all park trees.


  • Selects, purchases, and installs plant material, submits planting proposals with cost estimates; maintains maintenance records on all work.


  • Establish written daily schedules for landscape workers and continually review and refine the methods for providing landscaping maintenance services; allocate resources on the basis of established schedules and priorities. 


  • Employee works under the direction of Landscaping & Ground Foreman. Employee must have the ability to make appropriate decisions regarding diseased and potentially hazardous trees, work outdoors in inclement weather, and deal effectively with the public. Supervision is exercised over a small maintenance staff. Work is reviewed through performance evaluations and through review of completed projects for quality and results achieved.



  • Schedules and performs general maintenance tasks necessary to keep machinery, equipment and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, checking fluid levels, replacing fluids, greasing equipment, washing/cleaning equipment, and cleaning shop/work areas; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment.


  • Transports, loads and unloads various equipment and materials, which may include skid steerer’s, tractors, chain saws, leaf blowers and other equipment used in completion of assigned tasks.


  • Receives various forms, instructional materials, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.


  • Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, City officials, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.


III. Other Job Duties


Provides assistance or backup coverage to other employees or departments as needed.  Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Requirements




High school diploma (or GED equivalent) required; supplemented by two (2) year previous experience and/or training involving groundskeeping, lawn maintenance and general construction work (or related); or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position.  Must possess a valid state driver’s license.


Require or must be willing to obtain a Tennessee Pesticide Applicators' Certification within 12 months
