Monday-Friday 8 am- 5 pm


Position Summary:

Under the supervision of Housing Maintenance Supervisor, perform janitorial and grounds keeping duties and some maintenance for Housing.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide and maintain a professional and positive working relationship with tenants, vendors, contractors, and staff pertaining to the operation to SCHD.
  • Perform occasional carpentry work, maintenance, drywall and painting.
  • Complete and submit all work orders to Maintenance Supervisor weekly as required by policies and procedures.
  • Assist in completion of move-in and move-out and warranty inspections, re-paint and repair units prior to new occupancy.
  • Perform landscape maintenance and grounds work as assigned; operate lawn tractor and mowers and make minor repairs.
  • Perform snow removal with plow, shovel, and snow blowers as required.
  • Maintain Housing office areas; wash windows, clean, dust, mop, wax and vacuum and clean bathrooms.  Change light bulbs and empty trash containers.
  • Notify management concerning minor repairs and abide by all safety regulations.
  • Provide excellent customer service for all internal and external customers of the operations at all times.  Provide solutions for customer concerns and continually focus on customer service as our top priority.
  • Must maintain strict confidentiality and present a positive, professional demeanor and image at all times.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of use of maintenance tools, chemicals, cleaners, and disinfectants.
  • Knowledge of the methods and practices used in preventive maintenance and repair work.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and applicable safety practices.
  • Skill in the use of cleaning tools, chemicals, cleaners, and disinfectants.
  • Skill in the safe operation of power tools and shop equipment.
  • Skill in diagnosing and repair of equipment utilized.
  • Skill in operating Housing applicable software.
  • Ability to safely operate and use various maintenance equipment such as mowers, pruners, trimmers, and power washers.
  • Ability to use hand tools and lawn maintenance equipment.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
  • Ability to maintain confidential information.
  • Ability to work independently and meet strict time lines.
  • Ability to work extended hours and various work schedules.

Physical Demands:

  • Strenuous physical exertion in climbing ladders and lifting heavy objects.
  • Frequent use of hands, wrists, fingers associated with repair equipment.
  • Required to stand and walk for extended periods of time and reach with arms and hands.
  • Occasionally sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
  • Normal visual acuity, ability to talk and hear.
  • Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Work Environment:

  • Must possess sufficient stamina to work under all types of weather conditions including extreme hot/cold and to lift, carry, push, or pull a variety of tools, equipment and materials
  • Works indoors and outside. 
  • Exposure to chemicals and hazardous materials and moving parts may occur.
  • Situations where safety equipment is needed may occur.
  • Extended hours and irregular shifts may be required.  
  • Evening and weekend work may be required. 
  • Travel may be required.


Minimum Requirements

  • One year experience with basic maintenance and grounds keeping. 
  • Experience with operation, maintenance, and janitorial equipment preferred.
  • Must possess good diagnostic skills.
  • Must be able to pass background check to meet the employment eligibility requirements as they pertain to the position.

License, Certification, or Special Requirements:

  • Must have a valid Michigan Driver’s License and must be able to obtain and maintain a Tribal Driver’s License and qualify for coverage by SCIT auto liability insurance carrier. 
  • Native American preference shall apply to all positions.
