Starting Wage: $225+ per week, depending on qualifications

Date of Employment:  June 16 – August 24, 2019

This is a residential position that includes room and board.


Would you like to change lives by making sure camp is an amazing experience for every camper? At Camp Seymour you get to teach kids self-reliance, a love for nature and the outdoors, and the development of attitudes and practices that build character and leadership – all amidst the fun of camp fires, canoeing, archery, talent shows, and meaningful relationships.

If hired for this position you will have housing on camp property in a cabin or yurt and venture out on trips with groups of campers where they will be expected to carry up to 50 lbs and sleep in the outdoors or in a tent. You will be expected to organize and implement camp experience experience safely and professionally with a co-leader.

You will spend your days outside laughing, talking, and participating in everything from campfire to canoeing and archery. You will be an adult role model who encourages creativity, instills confidence, self-esteem, a life of adventure, and a sense of belonging. 

In this position you will be able to use your skills to:

  • Build relationships:
    • Supervise staff placed in Unit; which will include coaching, teaching, modeling, reinforcing, assisting with difficult situations and correcting behavior. 
    • Establish, communicate and positively reinforcing performance standards for staff.
    • Make a conscious effort to get to know staff as individuals: interests, working style, strengths, areas for improvement, putting a conscious effort into ensuring that it is an impactful, enjoyable summer for staff too.
  • Demonstrate YMCA Values:
    • Recognize individual and group situations and effectively resolve conflicts based on camp values and procedures.
    • Know, enforce, and follow all safety guidelines associated with the camp and all program areas.  This includes but is not limited to being responsible for your campers’ safety and their whereabouts at all times.
    • Connect with each camper quickly, and make campers feel welcome and included. 
  • Provide Quality Results:
    • Help facilitate daily programming, including overnights.  Add creativity and variety to the camp program with the help of the camp director and camp staff.
    • Assume on Duty responsibilities, run meal times, Line ups, make snack, lock up and other responsibilities as mutually agreed upon with a supervisor. 
    • Participate 100% with activities; enjoy playing, and not "sit on the sidelines", being visible throughout the day, leading transition times and supervising campers

Requirements

 


Are you a good fit?

  • I am at least 21 years old.
  • I have experience in leading trip/travel program and/or significant personal outdoor experience.
  • I have experience paddling an ocean kayak for long periods of time and charting a course in open water ways effected by tides.
  • I have worked at a camp for at least two summers or have related experience in child leadership.
  • I have Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Responder, CPR. Lifeguarding certification preferred.
  • I want to make the difference in the life of a child this summer.
