The Medication Assistant assists with passing of medications to the patients, and other  related duties as delegated. Work is full-time or part-time during the week days, with some overtime at times, as approved by the supervisor. Communicates with staff nurses during week and may communicate with on-call nurse when staff nurse not available.  The residential site may be the clinic, a home and/or an apartment complex which may have two stories; if two stories, the top story is accessible by one flight of stairs.   Work may vary with the needs of the patient population.

A high degree of accuracy in documentation and observation , adaptability to a variety of situations, along with organizational and communication skills is necessary for this position.

1.    Responsible for passing medication to patients, including controlled medications, assisting with self-administration, documentation of med passes, and g-tube feedings after   training by nursing department and on-going monitoring by nursing department.

2.    For quality assurance purposes, does medication checks.  Reports observations to nursing.  Must be aware of standing routine medication orders and utilize appropriately with nursing direction.  Provides follow-up staff training on medication distribution as needed.
      
3.    Monitoring and /or recording of vital signs, including temperature and blood pressure readings, pulse, respirations to report to nursing as needed.  Will do finger stick blood sugars as needed.  Apply first aid if required.

4.    Maintain print-out of medications to be placed in apartment medication cabinets to train staff and patient on purpose of medication.  Maintain patient charts in nursing office, i.e. filing, copying, etc.  Requires reaching, handling, carrying and lifting files weighing up to 15 pounds.

5.    Participates in tracking inventories of stock medications, first aid supplies/kits, and medical supply articles ( i.e.: diapers, chucks, gloves, wipes, etc.).  May move boxes weighing up to 30 pounds.   

6.    Correctly utilizes the pain scale of 1-5 with patients, and discusses these findings with nursing who will determine appropriate treatment.

7.    Performs toilet and chair transfers without assistance for patients up to 150 pounds utilizing approved transfer techniques. Transfer techniques include standing , walking, stooping, bending, kneeling, squatting, lifting, carrying pushing, pulling.  Patients requiring moderate to maximum assistance and weighing over 150 pounds are lifted and transferred by two persons.

8.    Uses special equipment as required by each patient including but not limited to wheelchairs, walkers, canes etc. at any given time according to the outline of each patients program.

9.    Maintains professional and ethical relationships with staff, patients, patient families, and other visitors. 

10.   Attends staff meetings, in services, and all scheduled shifts.

11.   Comprehends and follows instructions:

           a.       Maintain attention and concentration for necessary periods.

           b.        Apply common sense understanding and carry out instructions (written,
                      oral or diagrammatic).

           c.       Adapt to situations requiring the precise attainment of set limits,
                     tolerance or standards. 

12.    Performs simple and repetitive tasks:

           a.        Ask simple questions or request assistance when needed.

           b.        Perform routine, concrete, organized activities.
         
           c.        Remember locations and work procedures.
            
           d.        Make decisions based on simple sensory data.

13.    Maintains work pace appropriate to given work load:
 
           a.       Perform activities on schedule, maintain regular attendance, and
                     be punctual within specified tolerance.
                        
           b.      Complete normal workday and /or week, perform at a consistent
                    pace without excessive rest periods.
                      
14.      Performs complex or varied tasks:

           a.      Synthesize, coordinate and analyze data.
                  
           b.      Perform job requiring precise attainment of set limits, tolerances or
                    standards.

15.      Relates to other people beyond giving and receiving instructions :

           a.    Can get along with co-workers or peers without exhibiting behavioral extremes.

PREFERRED DUTIES AND REQUIREMENTS

Performs other duties as assigned.  

May take patients to medical appointments.

Work is normally performed at the CNS sites, including clinic, residential and in the community.

High School Graduate or GED required.

Requires training as Medication Aide or Medical Assistant.
