General Description of Duties:

The Referral Clerk is responsible for answering and processing all incoming telephone calls pertaining to referrals, directing them to the appropriate department or individual, and verifying patient insurance.  Approaches his/her tasks in a team based care fashion that supports patients and their families in a self-management, self-efficacy and behavior change. Adheres to the spirit of the SALUD mission statement while performing assigned duties.

Supervision Received:

Works under the direct supervision of the Medical Support Manager.

Supervision Exercised:

None

Specific Duties:

Works in conjunction with Medical Providers, Dental Providers, Behavioral Health Providers and all other staff to ensure that patients obtain the highest standard of integrated health care.

Acts a patient advocate for our vulnerable populations by ensuring the patients are fully informed and comfortable with their visit to SALUD

 Answers all referral telephone calls with a pleasant voice and directs them to the appropriate department or individual.  If necessary, asks pertinent questions to be able to correctly direct call.   Be familiar with staff duties as to know where to direct call. 

Follows procedures for the electronic health records systems

Verify patient insurance and find a specialist who will see patient based on their insurance.

Process referrals and fax to specialist after attaching labs, x-rays and medical reports to referral request.

Call patients to advise them of referral information so they can schedule an appointment with the specialist.  After three attempts to contact patient, mail them a letter with referral information.

Be knowledgeable about requirements of programs offered at SALUD.

 Performs all other duties as assigned

 

Minimum Requirements

 

Qualifications for Appointment:

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Ability to read, understand and follow oral and written instruction.  Ability to fluently speak Spanish and English and speak clearly and concisely with a pleasant telephone voice.  Abilities of cordiality and warmth that will effectively establish and maintain working relationships with clients.  Must be able to demonstrate calm assuring manner in spite of maximum activity and demonstrate high accuracy in all circumstances. Sensitivity to low income and ethnic minority community a must.

Must work well with the other patient care team members.

Education:

Graduation from High School or equivalent

Experience:

One year general office experience desires.

Licensure/Certification:

None needed

Blood borne pathogen risk level:

Low risk for blood borne pathogens

Environmental Conditions:

Normal Medical and Dental office environment

Physical Requirements:

Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record data electronically and communicating with patients.  Requires sitting for long periods of time.   Requires ability to work under stressful or emergency situations with high concentration and energy level
