General Description of Duties:

Performs professional dental care in the field of dental hygiene including all related clinical procedures.  Has broad responsibilities for clinical and community dental health education activities.  The Dental Hygienist approaches his/her tasks in a team based care fashion that supports patients and their families in self-management, self-efficacy and behavior change.  Adheres to the spirit of the SALUD mission statement while performing assigned duties.


Supervision Received:Works primarily under the supervision of the Center Dental Director; but also works under the supervision of the Executive VP of Dental Services and all clinic dentists.



Supervision Exercised:

Exercises supervision of the dental assistants and other assigned personnel.


Specific Duties:

  1. The Dental Hygienist acts as a patient advocate for our vulnerable populations by ensuring that the patients are fully informed and comfortable with their visit to SALUD.
  2. Works in conjunction with Medical Providers, Dental Providers, Behavioral Health Providers and all other staff to ensure that the patient obtains the highest standard of integrated health care.
  3. Follows procedures for the electronic health records.
  4. Provides following clinical services: Oral prophylaxis; instruction for proper home care techniques for oral hygiene including proper toothbrushing, flossing, nutrition, and need for professional care; topical fluorides; screen and evaluate patients regarding caries detection, periodontal pathology, medical history; exposing, processing and mounting of radiographs, supra and subgingival scaling and curettage; root planing; procedures involving team periodontal surgical techniques; performing of expanded duties where qualified, as delegated by dentist and governed by Colorado law; administration of local anesthetics; and gross debridement in treatment of acute periodontal conditions.
  5.  Primarily responsible for the initiation and maintenance of the dental prevention and dental education program.
  6. Assists in the training of dental assistants and in the precepting of dental hygiene students.
  7. Provide dental health services appropriate to the age-specific needs of all patients in accordance with the principles of growth and development for infant, child, adolescent, adult and geriatric life cycles.
  8. Is responsible for the sterilization of instruments, and the cleaning and routine maintenance of equipment and work areas.
  9. Participates in the Medical-Dental Integration Program.
  10. Performs other duties as assigned. 



Minimum Requirements


Qualifications for Appointment:

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:


Working knowledge of all phases of the field of dental hygiene.  Skill in the techniques of oral hygiene procedures and the use of equipment, instruments and materials.  Must work well with other patient care team members.   Knowledge and practice of preventative dentistry and ability to instruct patients individually and in groups.  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with patients and staff.  Ability to operate, maintain, and document in the electronic record.  Sensitivity to low income and ethnic minority community a must.  Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.




Graduation from an accredited School of Dental Hygiene.




Previous experience desired, but not required.




Possession of a valid current license as a registered dental hygienist in the State of Colorado.   Maintain current CPR Certification.


Bloodborne Pathogen Risk Level:


High exposure to blood borne pathogens.


Environmental Conditions:

Normal Medical and Dental office environment


Physical Requirements:

Requires sitting for long periods of time and crouching in a forward position.  Requires manual dexterity.  Requires depth perception, normal visual acuity and hand-eye coordination.  Requires standing, walking and stretching to operate department equipment.   Requires pulling, pushing and fingering with hands, wrists, arms and upper body.  Requires the ability to work under stressful conditions and in a confined area with accuracy.  Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record data electronically and to communicate with patients.
