As directed by the General Counsel, the Senior Associate General Counsel shall represent the Tribe in all judicial and administrative forums and in the Tribe’s governmental and business relations with all persons, organizations and entities, public and private The Senior Associate General Counsel shall supervise and coordinate the work of the one Associate General Counsel or other attorney or personnel as directed by the General Counsel.
CONTACTS/PURPOSE OF CONTACTS:
Contact with members of Tribal Council, Executive Council, CEO, CFO, Tribal Administrator, Department Directors and Managers, Attorneys representing the Tribe as outside counsel, vendor representatives, community members and members of the general public.
WORK ENVIRONMENT/SAFETY HAZARDS:
Must be able sit for long periods of time, lift up to 25 lbs., walk, twist and bend as necessary to perform required tasks. Substantial amount of keyboarding and handwriting required
Licensed as active member in good standing by the State Bar of Michigan or must become licensed following the next available bar exam; 4 + years experience as a practicing attorney (minimum 3 + years experience working for an Indian tribe or Indian organization); knowledgeable about Federal Indian law and the history of Indian tribes; sensitivity to Indian rights; ability to adjust priorities on short notice and to apply effective management techniques and leadership skills in directing the activities of attorneys and support personnel; and demonstrated experience in managing complex legal issues and litigation. The successful candidate should have excellent research, writing and oral skills, high academic achievement and strong references.
