Enrichment Music Teacher
Join the YMCA of Greater Hartford and Building Educated Leaders for Life (BELL) in delivering the Power Scholars Academy to teach, enrich, inspire, and transform children into scholars. Work with Power Scholars Academy and change the world, one scholar at a time.
GHYMCA is seeking Music teachers for the Y BELL Power Scholars Academy sites in Hartford at Dr. Frank T. Simpson-Waverly School and in East Harford at Anna E. Norris Elementary School.
Hartford location: starts June 19,2017- July 28,2017
East Hartford location: starts June 26,2017- August 4,2017
· Developing and implementing appropriate enrichment classes for assigned grade levels.
· Preparing classrooms for daily activities and collaborating with academic teachers and teacher's assistants to ensure that objectives are reached.
· Maintaining accurate classroom records.
· Maintaining an organized and efficient classroom.
· Adhering to all Power Scholar Academy and district professional expectations and compliance issues.
· Creating a positive, achievement-oriented, organized and engaging learning environment.
· Motivating and holding scholars to high academic and behavioral expectations.
· Providing consistent rewards and/or consequences for scholar behavior grounded in positive discipline.
· Empowering scholars to make positive choices and serving as a role model.
· Being accountable for meeting scholars' individual academic and instructional needs.
· Ensuring enrichment goals are met for each scholar.
· Creating and directing project based learning.
· Mentoring and supporting the professional development of the teacher's assistants.
· Supervising scholars during guest speaker engagements, field trips, lunch and recess.
- ALL enrichment teachers are required to develop lesson plans and produce a presentation/showcase for all grade levels to present at the BELL Program Celebration in August.
Music teachers will engage children to listen, play and sing to various music genres.
Bachelor's degree is required. Master's degree is preferred.
· Minimum of two years teaching experience in an urban public school with (elementary) children.
· Commitment to teamwork and collaboration with diverse populations.
· Desire to work with (elementary/middle school) scholars and their families in under-resourced communities.
· Outstanding verbal, written, and technological (computer/internet) skills.
· Ability to build relationships and influence scholars, staff, community members & families.
· Demonstrated leadership ability.
· Excellent organizational and communication skills.
· Committed to the goals of the program and approach.
· Love and respect for children.
· Evidence of efficacy and willingness to be a team player.
· Belief and commitment to the Y's mission and values.
· Background experience and/or education in teaching, Art, Life Skills, Music, Dance, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) or physical activity to elementary school children.
