Under the supervision of the Health and Wellness Director, the Yoga Instructor will be responsible for teaching yoga classes: offer quality customer service to our members by teaching safe and functionally challenging classes that promote total fitness development.

Essential Functions:

  1. Always being an advocate for the Y.
  2. Lead classes following YMCA fitness standards.
  3. Develop positive relationships with members and provide motivational support and guidance.
  4. Supervise class participants and activities to ensure safety and report any irregularities to supervisor immediately.
  5. Make yourself available to all members regardless of age, gender, race, socioeconomic status, or fitness level. Share your knowledge and be a resource for sound health and fitness information.
  6. Take responsibility to keep studio/exercise classroom and equipment neat and clean.
  7. Assume total responsibility for obtaining qualified substitutes when needed and inform supervisor.
  8. Allow at least ten minutes to prepare for class and allow for at least five minutes after class to be available for members.
  9. Ensure safe and effective workouts.  Respond to, and report, accidents and incidents.
  10. Attendance at staff meetings is mandatory.

          The member relations aspect of this position requires that relationship building be the number one priority at all times, attending to the needs and requests of health seekers, members, and all people within the YMCA in a courteous and friendly manner.


Minimum Requirements



  • Must have fitness/wellness background and ability to individually and group instruct others.
  • National certification (ACE, NETA, AFAA, NASM) in group fitness instruction or must be willing to complete the YMCA’s foundations of Group Exercise within 30 days of hire.
  • Appropriate Yoga Certification.
  • CPR/AED Certification required upon hire.
  • Ability to motivate and lead others.
  • Ability to respond to safety and emergency situations.
  • Should have a basic knowledge of body mechanics to know what effect the movements have on various major muscle groups in order to prevent injury. 


  • Must be able to stand for the duration of the shift
  • Must be able to bend and stoop occasionally
  • Must be able to lift 15 pounds occasionally
