The Riptides Swim Team, a program offered by the Hale Family YMCA in Putnam, Connecticut, is a YMCA and USA Swimming registered club. This fast-growing team is seeking an enthusiastic, energetic and passionate part-time head swim coach to work with the assistant coaching staff in administering the competitive youth training program.


  1. Creating thorough, age-appropriate workouts focusing on technique, endurance, stroke development, drills, etc.;
  2. Recruits, hires, trains, develop, schedules and directs and volunteers as needed. Reviews and evaluates coaching performance;
  3. Lead structured practices on weekday evenings throughout the year;
  4. Record all workouts and track daily attendance
  5. Maintains teams web page and weekly, daily communication to swimmers, parents, volunteers and aquatics department;
  6. Administrative matters relating to the team, swim meet arrangements and team performance as well as interaction with parents;
  7. Coordinating and executing swim team competitions and meet registrations and recording times and collecting other relevant data at swim meets;
  8. Attend swim team events such as league board meets, annual GHYMCA meetings, and social events.
  9. Engage parents and cultivate relationships to create a collaborative swim team environment;
  10. Plan swim team social event planning, as necessary;
  11. Run, plan, develop stroke clinics (if any) offered between competitive seasons;
  12. Plan, run or attend training opportunities offered by GHYMCA, the swim league or CT swimming;
  13. Assist in maintaining a clean, safe and positive environment for swim team participants.
  14. Respond and communicate to any and all questions or concerns about the swim team in a timely fashion.
  15. Performs other duties as assigned.


Minimum Requirements

  •  21 years of age preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent.
  • Proficiency in Hy-Tek and Team Unify.
  • 3+ years’ experience as a competitive swimmer; collegiate competitive swimming experience preferred;
  • 2+ years as a head swim coaching experience preferred;
  • Possesses (or can obtain upon hire) USA Swimming and YMCA coaching credentials;
  • Must be able to demonstrate proficiency of swim skills and have a strong foundation in stroke mechanics and be able to communicate effectively with swimmers and their parents;
  • Enthusiastic, dynamic presence with good communication skill;
  • Certifications: CPR for Professional Rescuer, AED, and First Aid certifications or willingness to obtain;


Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift 20 pounds
  • Stand and walk for long periods at a time 
  • Work in a warm environment
