This position is full-time, nonexempt, classified and covered as defined by The Board of Commissioners of the County of Allen Employee Handbook.

Hours are Monday – Friday; 7:30 am – 4:00 pm; 40 hours/week; ability to be on call 24/7; overtime as required

Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Registered Nurse is responsible for maintaining the safety and medical needs of residents during their stay at the facility and performing associated administrative tasks.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Performs history, physical and psychosocial assessments on each resident upon admission.  Assists Medical Director with resident physicals, obtains and reviews immunization records of all residents and ensures that all dental and vision exams are up-to-date.
  • Responsible for administering medications to all residents and for reviewing and maintaining accurate documentation related to medications and daily medication records.
  • Provides illness and emergency care to all staff and residents and is on-call 24/7 for all medical needs.
  • Coordinates care between residents’ primary care provider, psychiatrist, dentist, ophthalmologist, counselor and others regarding medications, appointments and updates in behavior or medical issues and maintains contact and gives updates to parents/guardians, case workers and probation.
  • Coordinates care with community services to include STD clinic, TB clinic, immunization clinic, local pharmacies, as well as probation, Department of Child Services (DCS), families, residential placements, hospitals and inpatient psychiatric facilities.
  • Trains all new staff regarding medical policies and procedures.  Trains staff in American Heart Association CPR, First Aid and AED. Provides continued education to staff regarding medication administration, disease and prevention, health screenings and related procedures.
  • Maintains proper medical records for all staff and residents, ensuring that all documents are up-to-date and the proper policies and procedures are being followed.
  • Performs job related administrative duties.
  • Assists Youth Care Workers with supervision of residents and their duties.
  • Transports residents to appointments and responds to crisis situations.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned, including overtime as required.

 

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing and three years’ experience in psychosocial and/or pediatric nursing
  • Indiana State Registered Nurse License in good standing
  • American Heart Association First Aid, CPR and AED instructor certified
  • Tuberculosis (TB) Mantoux certification
  • Valid Driver’s License to provide transportation to residents
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong computer skills with the ability to use Microsoft Office and other job related software
  • Ability to use otoscope, stethoscope, sphygmomanometer, thermometer, syringes, fax machine, multi-line phone and other job related equipment

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The Registered Nurse works in a youth group home setting with frequent sitting and some walking and standing.  Some lifting of up to forty pounds, bending, pushing/pulling, reaching overhead, monitoring of equipment and exposure to extreme temperature, chemicals and noxious odors exists.  Very frequent typing, attention to detail and mental/visual effort and frequent detailed inspection, proofreading and exposure to noise exist.  The Registered Nurse frequently deals with angry residents and their families who may be violent and/or aggressive and is frequently exposed to bloodborne pathogens.
