This position is full-time, non-exempt, classified and covered as defined under The Board of Commissioners of the County of Allen Employee Handbook.

*Openings at North Barn (2234 Carroll Rd) and South Barn (8317 Tillman Rd) locations

Hours are Monday - Friday; 7:00 am - 3:30 pm; 40 hours/week; overtime as required

Under the direction of the Highway Department Supervisor, the Maintenance Worker I performs maintenance and repair to county roads and highways.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Responsible for operating trucks and heavy equipment to maintain or construct roads, culverts, bridges and drainage structures.
  • Performs inspections including, but not limited to ensuring proper fluid levels, tire pressure and mechanical functions on trucks and equipment before use.
  • Replaces catch basins and repairs field tile for water run off drainage.
  • Provides traffic control and flagging at road construction sites.
  • Works on road crew performing asphalt repairs, mowing, vector removal and related maintenance and repairs.
  • Responsible for snow removal, machine repairs, brush cutting, tree removal, dead animal removal and stump grinding.
  • Loads, hauls, dumps, and spreads crushed stone, sand, salt and other materials from trucks.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned, including overtime as required; including overtime as needed.

 

 

 

 

 REQUIREMENTS:

  • High School Diploma or GED and one year experience in truck operation experience preferred.
  • Commercial Driver’s License with Class A endorsement for operating County vehicles and equipment.
  • Knowledge of patching highways, OSHA rules for working near and around traffic.
  • Knowledge of basic roadway construction
  • Ability to operate dump trucks, chain saw, construction equipment and tools including, but not limited to loader, bob cat, excavator, back-hoe, and motor grader.
  • Working knowledge of repair and proper installation of the water run off systems and drainage.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The Maintenance Worker I frequently lifts up to sixty pounds, with frequent bending, pushing and/or pulling loads, kneeling, and climbing ladders and some reaching overhead and crawling.  Frequent standing and sitting with some walking is required.  There is very frequent exposure to temperature extremes and dangerous equipment with frequent exposure to noise and noxious odors and fumes and some exposure to chemicals. Frequent attention to detail, monitoring of equipment and detailed inspection with some proofreading is required.  Exposed to hazards associated with working in heavy traffic.
