This position is full-time, nonexempt, classified and covered as defined by The Board of Commissioners of the County of Allen Employee Handbook.

Hours are Monday - Friday; 8:00 am - 4:30 pm and as needed; overtime as required

Under the direction of the Clinical Director of Nursing, the Public Health Nurse is responsible for providing clinical nursing services to prevent and/or treat infectious disease transmission within the community and to provide education and community referrals to assist clients in achieving optimal personal health.


  • Responsible for conducting STD & Infectious Disease exams including health history, specimen collection, treatment per protocol, CLIA waived testing and education.
  • Provides medication/supply inventory management.
  • Prepares patients for physician appointment including health history and vital signs.
  • Provides immunizations to clients as appropriate with education and observation per protocol.
  • Answer questions and provide information to clients and community partners concerning health information and scheduling assistance.
  • Implements physician orders including community referrals, medication administration, Civil Surgeon exam services, infectious disease services as requested, client education and coordination of other related services.
  • Assists with clinical Quality Assurance/Control Activities and training new employees.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned, including overtime as required.

Minimum Requirements and Working Conditions



  • Bachelor Degree's in Nursing and one year previous nursing experience preferred
  • Nursing skills needed to assess, educate and document
  • Ability to obtain supply management skills
  • Knowledge and skills to effectively ensure proper techniques of collecting specimens
  • Ability to perform phlebotomy
  • Working knowledge of computer skills, database experience and accurate data entry skills
  • Valid Indiana State Registered Nurse License in good standing
  • National Incident Management System (NIMS) certification upon employment as required for all public health staff.
  • Valid CPR Certification
  • TB Skin Testing within three months of employment


The Public Health Nurse is exposed to health and physical concerns normally associated with public health nursing for the general public including lifting up to forty pounds, bending, and kneeling.  The Public Health Nurse is frequently exposed to bodily fluids and needle sticks.
