This position is part time, non-exempt, unclassified and not covered under The Board of Commissioners of the County of Allen Employee Handbook.

Hours vary; evenings and Saturdays required; up to 20 hours/week

Under the direction of the Security Coordinator,  the Security Officer is responsible for providing safety to all staff, offenders, and visitors in and around the Community Corrections building and for enforcing all rules and regulations of the agency and individual programs, ensuring compliance by all persons.


  • Acts as the first responder to any threat or danger to staff, offenders, visitors, or the building.  Visually inspects all persons entering the building and removes anyone who possesses a danger.
  • Conducts searches of all offenders and visitors passing through the security check point, ensuring the person does not have weapons, contraband, and other illegal or prohibited items prohibited.
  • Enforces all rules and regulations of the Community Corrections building and program as it relates to offender/staff safety and rules governing offender conduct and determines and distributes sanctions as warranted.
  • Monitors the building through the use of video surveillance and visually inspects the building to ensure staff safety and offender compliance to building and program rules.
  • Places participants in holding cell upon request of the hearing board or as required for staff, offender, and visitor safety.  Prepares and forwards all required reports and paperwork.
  • Advises staff when an offender has arrived for a scheduled appointment.  Determines needs of offenders without an appointment and attempts to resolve issues.
  • Provides information to all visitors and offenders concerning the program.  Distributes all requested forms to offenders and receives employment verifications.
  • Oversees offenders assigned to cleaning the building or the parking lot from the community service work crew.
  • Administers portable breath tests to offenders and secures urine screens from offenders.
  • Greets visitors, answers telephone, responds to inquiries regarding offenders of the facility, and/or routes caller to appropriate person or department.
  • Responsible for conducting supervised urine drug screens on female offenders under supervision by Allen County Community Corrections.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements and Working Conditions



  • High School Diploma or GED and two years’ experience in law enforcement, security or related field
  • Must be female in order to conduct supervised drug screens on female offenders
  • Must have knowledge of legal terminology
  • Strong computer skills with the ability to use Microsoft Office and other job related software
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong report writing abilities
  • Skilled in defensive tactics
  • Ability to use a variety of law enforcement equipment, including, but not limited to hand held radios, portable breath test machine, metal detectors and video surveillance equipment
  • Ability to work with high risk offenders and a variety of law enforcement personnel
  • Must successfully complete motivational interviewing and crisis intervention training upon hire


The Security Officer performs work that requires frequent sitting and standing, with some walking. Some lifting of up to twenty pounds, bending, pushing/pulling loads, reaching overhead, kneeling, crawling and climbing ladders is required.  Very frequent attention to detail and frequent typing, monitoring of equipment, and detailed inspection exists. Some proofreading is required.
