This position is full-time, nonexempt, classified and not covered as defined by The Board of Commissioners of the County of Allen Employee Handbook.

Hours are 4:30 AM - 1:00 PM; weekends included; 40 hours/week; overtime as required

Under the direction of the Office Finance Manager, the Cook I/Kitchen Manager is responsible for the meal planning and preparation of the Youth Services Center, while ensuring all regulations are met and a clean and sanitary environment exists.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Responsible for planning, preparing and serving meals, ensuring School Food and Nutrition guidelines are met.
  • Maintains cleanliness of the kitchen, following Board of Health regulations.
  • Maintains documentation for the School Food and Nutrition Program, Board of Health, and Family & Social Services Administration.
  • Orders food and chemicals using a bid system and various venders.
  • Orders commodities from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
  • Plans and revises menus, ensuring plans meet School Food and Nutrition (SFN) standards.
  • Supervises and schedules all kitchen employees.
  • Manages kitchen inventory.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned, including overtime as required.

Minimum Requirements and Working Conditions

 

REQUIREMENTS:

  • High School Diploma or GED and more than one years’ experience in food services
  • Must be at least 21 years old
  • Serve-safe certification within six months
  • Nutrikids nutritional analysis certification within one year
  • Extensive knowledge of School Food and Nutrition standards
  • Strong computer skills with the ability to use Microsoft Office and other job related software
  • Knowledge of cooking and meeting special dietary needs

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The Cook I/Kitchen Manager works in a standard kitchen setting with frequent standing and the ability to walk around freely and occasionally sit.  Frequent lifting of up to forty pounds and attention to detail is required.  Some bending, pushing/pulling, reaching over head, kneeling, typing, monitoring of equipment, detailed inspection and exposure to extreme temperatures, dangerous equipment, chemicals, noise and noxious odors exists. The Cook I/Kitchen Manager maintains frequent contact with Allen County Youth Services Center residents who may be potentially violent and/or aggressive.
