THIS IS A GRANT FUNDED POSITION AND CONTINUED EMPLOYMENT IS CONTINGENT UPON FURTHER GRANT FUNDING.

This position is part-time, nonexempt, unclassified and not covered as defined by The Board of Commissioners of the County of Allen Employee Handbook.

Hours are 8:00 am – 4:30 pm; up to 15 hours/week

Under the direction of the Clinical Director of Nursing, the Public Health Nurse is responsible for providing clinical nursing services to prevent and/or treat infectious disease transmission within the community and to provide education and community referrals to assist clients in achieving optimal personal health.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Responsible for specimen collection during patient visits as well as tuberculosis follow-up for Infectious Disease appointments.  Responsible for assisting the physician during Infectious Disease appointments by providing testing, treatment, and scheduling.
  • Responsible for conducting sexually transmitted diseases (STD) exams including health history, specimen collection, treatment per protocol, Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) waived testing, and education.
  • Organizes and initiates community outreach for mobile/off-site immunization clinics, community outreach educational programs, and community health screenings.
  • Prepares patients for physician appointment including gathering a health history and vital signs.
  • Provides immunizations to clients as appropriate with education and observation per protocol.
  • Answer questions and provides information to clients and community partners concerning health information and scheduling assistance.
  • Implements physician orders including community referrals, medication administration, Civil Surgeon exam services, foreign travel, infectious disease services as requested, client education and coordination of other related services.
  • Assists with clinical Quality Assurance/Control Activities and training new employees.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements and Working Conditions

 

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Associate’s Degree in Nursing with a Bachelor’s Degree preferred and one year of nursing experience preferred
  • Indiana State Registered Nurse License in good standing
  • National Incident Management System (NIMS) certification upon employment as required for all public health staff.
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification
  • Tuberculosis (TB) Skin Testing within three months of employment
  • Nursing skills needed to assess, educate, and document health findings as well as appropriate interventions
  • Knowledge and skills to effectively ensure proper techniques of collecting specimens
  • Ability to perform phlebotomy and conduct various exams
  • Knowledge of vaccines and vaccination schedules
  • Working knowledge of the use of an Electronic Medical Record (EMR); computer skills, database experience and accurate data entry skills required

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The Public Health Nurse is exposed to health and physical concerns normally associated with public health nursing for the general public including lifting up to forty pounds, bending, kneeling, bodily fluids and needle sticks.
