Department: Food Services

Job Title of Immediate Supervisor: Food Services Director

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt/Hourly

As our Cook you will be responsible for cooking and preparing food for residents and providing supervision to Dietary staff on their scheduled shift.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Serves as shift supervisor providing overall direction and guidance as needed to help ensure work is done timely and in compliance with departmental policies and procedures.    
  • Provides “on the spot” training, guidance, coaching and counseling as needed to correct and improve dietary staff performance.
  • Responds to dietary staff questions / concerns and provides instruction and/or education to promote quality care.
  • Uses sound judgment and follows established protocol in determining which incidents or situations require immediate notification of Administrator or Department Director provides appropriate notification.     
  • As necessary to correct improper job performance and/or behavior of dietary staff, implements formal corrective action in compliance with established policy.   Included may be suspending a staff member and gathering / recording information regarding circumstances that lead to suspension.   
  • As requested by Department Director, participates in the interview process and selects or makes recommendations for selection of dietary staff.
  •  As requested, provides input to Department Director regarding performance appraisals for dietary staff.     

Principle Duties and Responsibilities

  • Using established and approved cooking methods, cooks food and designated alternatives in accordance with approved menus, and recipes. 
  • Cooking methods include baking, roasting, frying, steaming as well as prepares cold food such as salads and desserts.
  • Prepares special therapeutic diets for individual residents when required due to written orders of physician or other prescriber.  
  • When scheduled for morning shift, opens kitchen according to established and approved procedures. 
  • When scheduled for late shift, closes kitchen according to established and approved procedures. 
  • Follows menus and recipes as approved and only makes changes with the consent of the Food Service Director.
  • Labels by date and stores leftover food in approved containers in compliance with established procedures to ensure safe handling and storage.
  • Prepares food for special events such as in-house catered meetings, resident functions, holiday parties, celebrations, and other non-routine events that include food.  Included may be cooking or serving special “on-demand” food items in public at a carving station, omelet station, etc.  
  • When putting away incoming stock, rotates items appropriately, using the “first-in / first-out” method. 
  •  If needed, fulfills work duties of other Food Service staff.    
  • Observes all infection control standards including the wearing of hair nets, gloves, aprons, etc. and washes hands frequently. 
  • Trains new Food Service staff as directed. 

Requirements

 

Qualifications

  • 1 year of professional cooking experience preferred                      
  • Strong working knowledge of using recipes
  • Sanitation knowledge and certificate of training or the ability to obtain   
  • Customer service skills / hospitality approach
