This position in Speech Therapy is full time Monday - Friday, 7:30 AM - 4:30 PM, no weekends, no holidays! As part of this dynamic multi-disciplinary therapy team, you will perform patient SLP evals, develop & implement speech, communication, and cognitive therapy programs and foster independence in activities of daily living.  Travel opportunities to CNS facilities in CA and TX.

The Staff Speech-Language Pathologist is responsible for supervising and participating in the application of a variety of speech and cognitive therapeutic techniques for the rehabilitation of patients. Work is full time during weekdays. Work is performed at the clinic with some work occasionally at the residential site or in the community.

This position requires a high degree of accuracy in documentation and observation, strong organizational and communication skills, an ability to be flexible and adaptable to changing needs of staff and patients, and a strong background in the nature, treatment and identification of cognitive, language, auditory, or verbal disorders.

Examines and evaluates patients, identifies communication/cognitive problems, including the type of problems such as cognition, dysarthria, apraxia, language, dysfluncy, dysphagia, etc., the causal and/or maintaining factors, and the severity of the problems. Develops a treatment plan including long and short- term goals and manages and implements patient treatment programs (therapy and home programs). Treatment activities may include, but are not limited to, the Cognition Module, Attention Module, Auditory Rehabilitation Module, Echoic Store, Iconic Store, orientation, passive breathing, thermal stimulation, etc. Consistantly updates progress to ascertain program's effectiveness and modifies patient programs as needed. Requires visual and auditory acuity, verbal ability, fine motor coordination, problem solving, judgement, and planning abilities, to evaluate and treat patients.

Administers, scores, and interprets highly specialized diagnostic tests including, but not limited to, The Woodcock Johnson Test of Cognitive Abilities, Boston Aphasia Diagnostic Exam, Muma Assessment Program, etc., to determine the nature and extent of the communication/cognitive disorder(s). Informal tests are used as necessary. Employs electronic equipment such as audio and visual recorders, and auditory trainers. Other equipment may include laryngeal mirrors, tongue blades, flashlights, and computers as needed in the evaluation and treatment of patients.

Determines whether there is some organic basis for the communication problem through examination of the patient's oral peripheral mechanism and review of the medical records. Recommends need for medical, surgical, and/or prosthetic evaluation to aid in the rehabilitation of organically based communication problems, and communicate such to the Clinical Case Manager in charge of the patient's rehabilitation care to refer with proper medical personnel. Requires visual and auditory acuity, fine motor coordination, and safety awareness to administer examinations and treatment following set procedures and policies.

Requires ability to detect and identify specific needs of patients and make decisions based on needs. Requests appropriate referrals to other services for evaluation of factors related to the communication/cognitive disorder, i.e. audiology, otolaryngology, neurology, or other disciplines as needed.

Evaluates the need for prosthetic appliances to aid or facilitate the patient's treatment and development of communication skills such as communication boards, electronic devices and other necessary equipment. Makes recommendations regarding the need for evaluation of such devices as necessary. Requires ability to detect and identify specific needs of patients and make decisions based upon such needs.

Performs reporting procedures.

  1. Submits monthly (or more frequent) conference reports, initial evaluations, discharge summaries and therapeutic home programs for assigned patients.
  2. Performs daily charting for patients treated.
  3. Reports verbally or in writing (according to patient/carrier/company needs) in conferences, staffings and other meetings to inform necessary personnel, insurance carriers, patients' families, patients, (as appropriate) or others of patient testing, treatment and progress. Requires visual ability, fine motor coordination, and knowledge of grammar and spelling to dictate and review/edit reports.

Consults with patients, families and therapists from various clinic disciplines to instruct, advise or inform them of procedures and tests. Plans clinical programs under the direction of a Clinical Case Manager assigned to a specific patient's case. Determines recommendations for length of treatment and intensity of the program.

Provides for the safety of patients, visitors, staff and self when interacting with patients who may have behavioral outbursts.

  1. Must be able to recognize patient escalation, via verbal, physical and visual cues.
  2. Must be able to attempt to verbally and physically de-escalate patient using Behavior Modification techniques according to each patient's program, which may include Professional Crisis Assault Training (Pro-ACT) such as evasive self-defense (ability to get out of the way) and controlling self-defense (restraints).
  3. Physical intervention and restraints can include calling for help, lifting, standing, walking, running, stooping, bending, kneeling, squatting, carrying, pulling, pushing and assisting with the restraint of patients weighing up to 150 pounds or more.

Performs toilet and chair transfers with assistance for patients up to 150 pounds utilizing approved transfer techniques.  Transfer techniques include standing, walking, stooping, bending, kneeling, squatting, lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling.  Patients requiring moderate to maximum assistance and weighing over 150 pounds are lifted and/or transferred by two or more persons.

Uses special equipment as required by each patient including, but not limited to wheelchairs, tracheostomy tubes, gastric feeding tubes, and external catheters, at any given time according to the outline of each patient's program.  May require find motor manipulation, lifting, reaching, carrying, pushing and pulling when working with equipment.

Maintains professional and ethical relationships with staff, patients, patient families, and other visitors.

Attends staff meetings, in-services, and all scheduled shifts.

PREFERRED DUTIES AND REQUIREMENTS

Conducts in house training sessions regarding Speech-Language Pathology when needed.

Assists in the establishment of department policies and procedures.

Supervises speech students as requested.

Transports patients as needed.

SPECIAL SKILLS UTILIZED, EDUCATION LEVEL, TRAINING

Master's Degree in Speech-Language Pathology or Communication Disorders required.

Current or eligible for Certificate of Clinical Competence by the American Speech, Language and Hearing Association required.  May consider Clinical Fellow.

Current licensure or eligible to practice professional Speech Pathology in the state where practicing required.

Acute or post-acute rehabilitation experience preferred.
