The Housekeeping Assistant cleans and services clinical and residential building areas, moves furniture, equipment and supplies in and around clinic departments, residential homes and residential apartments and performs a variety of housekeeping duties, to maintain the facilities in an orderly and sanitary condition.  Work is full time during the weekdays.  Work is performed at the residential and clinic sites.  The residential site may be a home and/or an apartment complex which may have two stories; if two stories, the top story is accessible by one flight of stairs.

Successful maintenance of this position require a high level of organizational skills as well as the ability to detect, identify, and clean the facilities.


Minimum Requirements


1.    After receiving instructions as to the area and specific work assignment, assembles necessary cleaning supplies for transporting to the designated area.  At the end of shift, returns unused supplies to the utility room, leaves trash in designated areas, and cleans cart and equipment.  Assures compliance of State, CARF, OSHA (and, in CA, Cal-OSHA) regulations.  Requires walking, standing, and climbing stairs as well as lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, and handling of supplies.  Requires ability to read, write and follow oral and written instructions.

2.    Performs the following duties as required in each area:  sweeps, mops and vacuums floors.  May shampoo carpets using a wet vacuum and/or dry cleaning system weighing up to 50 pounds.

3.    Performs cleaning of facilities.

    a.    Uses dust clothes and vacuum cleaner to dust window sills, blinds, floors, and furniture.  Requires reaching, handling and fingering.

    b.    Washes walls, ceilings, and inside windows by hand using water, cleaning solutions, sponge and cloths.   Requires handling, lifting, carrying supplies as well as reaching to reach high spots on walls, windows, etc.  May require use of stepping stools and/or ladders.

    c.    Scours and polishes sinks, tubs, showers, toilets, mirrors, ovens, stoves, and similar equipment. Requires stooping, kneeling, bending, squatting, pulling, pushing, pulling, walking, and climbing stairs.

    d.    Distributes supplies at clinic and apartments such as:  soap, towels, toilet paper, cleaning supplies and other dispensable items.
    e.    Moves furniture to clean rooms and areas.  Requests help in moving heavy furniture and appliances over (50 pounds) and in turning mattresses.

    f.    Gathers and disposes of trash, washes waste baskets and large refuse containers and relines with paper or plastic bags.

    g.    Changes lightbulbs.  Cleans lighting fixtures, tops of windows, door frames and other high places using a ladder when necessary.

    h.    Uses substances which may be hazardous to self and/or others if not used according to directions.  Requires ability to follow directions.

    i.    Assists in laundry duties as requested.

4.    Disinfects areas by scrubbing or spraying.  Follows infection control guidelines. Requires fine motor coordination to manipulate spray bottles and other hand supplies.

5.    Reports any mechanical failures or negative conditions as observed for preparation of work order for maintenance repair.

6.    Assists Maintenance/Housekeeping Supervisor as needed.

7.    Receives special work assignments for maintenance and/or housekeeping.  Makes minor repairs as needed.  Uses special equipment as required for each task.  May use and maintain such equipment, including but not limited to ladders, scaffolding, vacuum cleaners, floor polisher, hand tools, broom, cloths, sponges, dollies, and containers of cleaning solutions weighing up to 50 pounds.

8.    Maintains professional and ethical relationships with staff, patients, patient families, and other visitors.

9.    Attends staff meetings, in-services, and all scheduled shifts.

10.    Comprehends and follows instructions:

1.    May be required to wash outside windows and screens.

2.    Hangs draperies, venetian blinds, and shades.  Requires reaching above head and use of ladder.

3.    May do minor repairs to venetian blinds and shades.

4.    Performs other duties as assigned.


1.    High school graduation or G.E.D. required.  Must be at least 18 years of age.

2.    Experience is preferred.
