The Staff Occupational Therapist is responsible for patient evaluations, program development, program implementation and the utilization of techniques and modalities necessary to provide competent occupational therapy services to patients. Work is full time during weekdays with occasional evening and weekend work. Work is performed at the CNS clinic with some work occasionally at the residential site or in the community.

A high degree of accuracy in electronic documentation and observation, adaptability to a variety of situations, ability to utilize technology, strong organizational and communication skills, decision making and an ability to evaluate situations as they occur is needed for this position.

Since 1980, CNS has provided post-acute medical treatment, rehabilitation and disease management, and offers residential, inpatient, outpatient and assisted living programs. Locations include Bakersfield, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dallas and Fort Worth.

Minimum Requirements

 

 

1. Administers initial evaluations, identifies major problems, develops treatment plan (goals and management), and administers patient therapy programs (i.e. range of motion). Reviews and update patient programs through interim evaluations. Performs on-site job, home, power tools and height evaluations.  Travels via car, airplane, and/or train to CNS clinics: Bakersfield, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dallas and Fort Worth is required to performs duties.

2. Performs reporting procedures.

a. Submits monthly (or more frequent) conference reports, initial evaluations, home programs and discharge summaries for assigned patients. Requires visual ability and fine motor manipulation to dictate and review/edit reports.

b. Performs daily charting for patients treated.

c. Reports verbally or in writing (according to patient/carrier/company needs) in conferences, staffings and other meetings to inform necessary personnel, insurance carriers, patients’ families and patients (as appropriate) of patient testing, treatment and progress.

3. Consults with patients, insurance representatives, families and therapists from various clinic disciplines to instruct, advise or inform them of procedures and tests. Communicates with outside ancillary services, e.g. neuro-optometrist, neurologist, etc. as needed.

4. Stays informed of all patient programs in the department.

5. Instructs clinic aides of treatment plan to be completed daily. Supervises clinic aides and students and is available at all times to provide advice or treatment.

6. Provides for the safety of patients, visitors, staff and self when interacting with patients who may have behavioral outbursts, which can include yelling, exiting, hitting, kicking, biting, spitting, scratching, and throwing objects.

a. Must be able to recognize patient escalation, via verbal, physical and visual cues.

b. Must be able to attempt to verbally and physically de-escalate patient using Behavior Modification techniques according to each patient's program, which may include Professional Assault Crisis Training (Pro-ACT) such as evasive self-defense (ability to get out of the way) and controlling self-defense (restraints).

c. Physical intervention and restraints can include calling for help, lifting, standing, walking, running, stooping, bending, kneeling, squatting, carrying, pulling, pushing and assisting with the restraint of patients weighing up to 200 plus pounds.

7. Performs toilet and chair transfers without assistance for patients up to 150 pounds utilizing approved transfer techniques. Transfer techniques include standing, walking, stooping, bending, kneeling, squatting, lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling. Patients requiring moderate to maximum assistance and weighing over 150 pounds are lifted and/or transferred by two persons.

8. Uses special equipment as required by each patient including, but not limited to wheelchairs, walkers or other equipment , at any given time according to the outline of each patient's program. May require fine motor manipulation, lifting, reaching, carrying, pushing and pulling when working with equipment.

9. Maintains professional and ethical relationships with staff, patients, patient families, students and other visitors.

10. Attends staff meetings, in-services, and all scheduled shifts.

11. Comprehends and follows instructions:

13. Maintains work pace appropriate to given work load:

a. Perform activities on schedule, maintain regular attendance, and be punctual within specified tolerance

b. Complete normal workday and/or week, perform at a consistent pace without excessive rest periods

14. Performs complex or varied tasks:

a. Synthesize, coordinate and analyze data

b. Perform job requiring precise attainment of set limits, tolerances or standards

15. Relates to other people beyond giving and receiving instructions:

a. Can get along with co-workers or peers without exhibiting behavioral extremes

b. Maintain open door policy to encourage active, empathetic listening

c. Perform work activities requiring negotiating, instructing, supervising, persuading or speaking with others

d. Respond appropriately to criticism from a supervisor and/or other staff member(s)

PREFERRED DUTIES AND REQUIREMENTS

1. Conducts in house training sessions regarding Occupational Therapy when needed.

2. Assists in orientation of new department staff.

3. Coordinates, evaluates and oversees Occupational Therapy student interns as needed.

4. Transports patients as needed.

5. Performs other duties as assigned.

SPECIAL SKILLS UTILIZED, EDUCATION LEVEL, TRAINING

1. Bachelor's or Master’s Degree in Occupational Therapy required.

2. Certification by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) required.

3. Current licensure or license eligible in states employed, if so required by the states.

4. Knowledge and experience with sensory integration and neuro development of visual system is recommended and preferred.
