The Transportation/Driver coordinates patient transportation and follows Department of Public Safety (Texas) requirements for driving.  Work is full-time and shifts may be mornings, afternoons, evenings, and/or split in this 24-hour/7-day per week residential facility.  Work may be performed at the clinic, residential site, and in the community and includes a majority of time spent in vehicles.  The residential site may be a home and/or an apartment complex which may have two stories; if two stories, the top story is accessible by one flight of stairs.  The vehicles include a bus with 3 steps and a wheelchair lift and Class C vans.

Successful maintenance of this position requires a high level of organization skills, extreme safety awareness and the ability to evaluate situations as they occur.

Minimum Requirements




1.  Requires familiarity with and adherence to Department of Transportation and Texas Department of Public Safety program regulations and CNS policies and procedures including submission to drug screening upon request and maintaining of a safe driving record.

2.  Assures that company vehicles are kept in safe working condition.  Conducts weekly vehicle safety inspections.  Requires visual acuity and the ability to detect problems in the vehicle.  Reports all vehicle repairs via a maintenance slip.

3.  Schedules and runs errands as needed while working within an overall schedule for patient's activities and weekday activities through the morning shift supervisor.  Transports patients, families, insurance carriers, etc., as needed.  Requires visual and mental acuity to operate vehicles in a safe manner.  Requires physical ability to operate a wheelchair lift and climb in and out of vehicle with 3 steps repeatedly.

4.  Supervises Neuro Rehabilitation Specialists (NRS) during transportation of patients to ensure safety.

5.  Provides for the safety of patients, visitors, staff and self when interacting with patients who may have behavioral outbursts, which can include yelling, exiting, hitting, kicking, biting, spitting, scratching, and throwing objects.

a.  Must be able to recognize patient escalation, via verbal, physical and visual cues.

b.  Must be able to attempt to verbally and physically de-escalate patient using Behavior Modification techniques according to each patient's program, which may include Professional Assault Crisis Training (Pro-ACT) such as evasive self-defense (ability to get out of the way) and controlling self-defense (restraints).

c.  Physical intervention and restraints can include calling for help, lifting, standing, walking, running, stooping, bending, kneeling, squatting, carrying, pulling, pushing and assisting with the restraint of patients weighing up to 150 pounds or more.

6.  Performs toilet and chair transfers without assistance for patients up to 150 pounds utilizing approved transfer techniques.  Transfer techniques include standing, walking, stooping, bending, kneeling, squatting, lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling.  Patients requiring moderate to maximum assistance and weighing over 150 pounds are lifted and/or transferred by two persons.

7.  Uses special equipment as required by each situation and patient including but not limited to wheelchairs, walkers, lifts, seatbelts, ramps, and tools to make minor repairs on the vehicle.

8.  Maintains professional and ethical relationships with staff, patients, patient families, and other visitors.

9.  Attends staff meetings, in-services, and all scheduled shifts.

1.  Performs other duties as assigned.


1.  High school graduation or G.E.D. required.  Must be at least 18 years of age.

2.  Excellent driving record and Class B license required for bus.  Must maintain health certification.  Excellent driving record and Class C license required for vans.

3.  Successful completion of Professional Assault Crisis Training (Pro-ACT) as soon as practicable after hire.

4.  Successful completion of CPR and First Aid certification as soon as practicable after hire.

5.  Experience with mentally or neurologically disabled is preferred.
