Centre for Neuro Skills (CNS) helps people with brain injury find hope, independence and a meaningful life - and you can play a key role in that journey as a Clinic Assistant.  

The Clinic Assistant assists with patient treatment and the implementation of therapeutic programs at the clinic, and home treatment programs at the residential site.  Work is full-time during the weekdays with occasional overtime, weekend and/or night work. Work is performed at the clinic along with regular rotations at the residential site or in the community.

A high degree of accuracy in documentation and observation, adaptability to a variety of situations, strong organizational and communication skills, decision making and an ability to evaluate situations as they occur is needed for this position.

Minimum Requirements



Assists with the implementation of patient treatment programs in the Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Speech/Education Departments according to legal guidelines and under the direct supervision of a licensed therapist.  Requires lifting, handling, carrying and manipulating patients, equipment and supplies weighing up to 150 pounds.  Requires ability to use proper lifting techniques, good balance, and sufficient strength to provide patients with virtually all levels of assistance from standby to maximum assistance.  Must have adequate endurance, motor, visual and cognitive skills to demonstrate and/or assist with therapeutic exercises, activities of daily living, social skills, transfers and handling therapeutic equipment.

Performs documentation such as daily progress notes, treatment modules, and behavior modification documentation.  Performs organizational/administrative projects such as filing and light typing.  Sets up and dismantles patient charts in a timely manner.

Performs end of the day clean-up consisting of cleaning the mats, changing pillow cases, and returning equipment to appropriate storage areas.  Routinely cleans hydrocollator in PT, storage closets and other equipment as necessary.  Reports all defective equipment to the appropriate department.

When working at the residential site, supervises and directly trains patients with Activities of Daily Living (ADL's), and therapeutic home programs. ADL's include such tasks as providing training and assistance with bathing, grooming, hygiene, toileting, dressing, housecleaning, cooking, clothes washing, and self-administration of medications.

Provides for the safety of patients, visitors, staff and self when interacting with patients who may have behavioral outbursts, which can include yelling, exiting, hitting, kicking, biting, spitting, scratching, and throwing objects.

  1. Must be able to recognize patient escalation, via verbal, physical and visual cues.
  2. Must be able to attempt to verbally and physically de-escalate patient using Behavior Modification techniques according to each patient's program, which may include Professional Assault Crisis Training (Pro-ACT) such as evasive self-defense (ability to get out of the way) and controlling self-defense (take-downs).
  3. Physical intervention and take-downs can include calling for help, lifting, standing, walking, running, stooping, bending, kneeling, squatting, carrying, pulling, pushing and assisting with the restraint of patients weighing up to 150 pounds or more.

Performs toilet and chair transfers without assistance for patients up to 150 pounds utilizing approved transfer techniques.  Transfer techniques include standing, walking, stooping, bending, kneeling, squatting, lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling.  Patients requiring moderate to maximum assistance and weighing over 150 pounds are lifted and/or transferred by two persons.

Uses special equipment as required by each patient including, but not limited to wheelchairs, walkers, canes, exercise mats, treatment balls, swings, rotating chairs, rocking boards, tilt tables, stationary bikes, universal weights and smaller equipment including writing implements, measuring tape and all equipment related to various forms of pain relief modalities at any given time according to the outline of each patient's program.  May require fine motor manipulation, lifting, reaching, carrying, pushing and pulling when working with equipment weighing up to 100 pounds.

A Clinic Assistant transports patients in company-owned or personal vehicle when company transportation vehicles are unavailable requiring transferring and driving abilities.  Must be a cleared driver, i.e. clear DMV report, registration, and insurance verification.

Maintains professional and ethical relationships with staff, patients, patient families, and other visitors.

Attends staff meetings, in-services, and all scheduled shifts.

Bachelor's Degree required.

Experience as a Neuro Rehabilitation Specialist, or experience in rehabilitation or related field is preferred.
