Staff Accountant

Job Description



The Staff Accountant is responsible for providing critical financial information in the consolidated and entity-level financial statements.  This information is delivered in the form of journal entries, monthly closing activities, account reconciliations, and accounting analysis for SYGMA in accordance with GAAP, SYSCO and SYGMA policies.  In addition, the Staff Accountant acts as a functional lead for key areas of accounting such as fixed assets, prepaids, earned income, and Sysco intercompany.  Periods of overtime may be required during month-end closing activity and key projects.  This position reports to the Accounting Manager.

Essential Functions

  • Prepare and Post weekly/monthly journal entries.
  • Prepare and analyze account reconciliations such as prepaids, earned income, and intercompany statements.
  • Perform financial statement review and analysis.
  • Provide accounting support to internal and external customers.
  • Produce and distribute weekly, monthly and quarterly reports
  • Control data collection for operational statistical data.
  • Perform quarterly SOX’s testing.
  • Special projects and other duties as assigned.





  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field preferred
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in accounting
  • Must have solid accounting skills and a working knowledge of GAAP
  • CPA and Food Service Industry background a plus.
  • Demonstrated advanced knowledge and skill with PC, G/L package, AS400 Query, Excel, calculator, copier, telephone, facsimile machine, Infinium
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Practical application with AS400 Query, G/L package, Microsoft Office, Outlook, 10 key by touch

  •  Ability to exercise confidentiality and work independently
  • Strong time management and ability to work under pressure
  • Ability to effectively communicate internal, external, upstream and downstream using email and telephone.
