Regional Safety Manager

Job Description

 

JOB SUMMARY

This position will be the Safety Manager at their assigned distribution center (see separate job description).  This position will also lead the implementation of a prevention focused health, safety, and environmental program (HSE) within their assigned Region.  This position will establish, execute, and deliver specific plans that support the company’s overall HSE objectives, including security, crisis preparedness, OSHA compliance, and DOT compliance objectives and implement these plans across their Regional SYGMA distribution centers.

 

The ideal candidate is an occupational safety, transportation safety, and environmental compliance subject matter expert that can clearly articulate, develop and implement HSE action plans.

Requirements

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Effectively communicate HSE strategy and objectives with the Regional VP of Operations and subsequently to their regions Safety Managers at the distribution center
  • Monitor, interpret and communicate regulatory changes to facility safety contacts.
  • Strengthen and develop site management knowledge in HSE core competencies.  Assist with the development and presentation of corporate and site-specific training programs as needed.
  • Assist in hiring and onboarding of safety, and operational professionals as needed
  • Support site management in the implementation of HSE plans
  • Design and implement effective metrics to track progress, proactively identify areas of concern and drive accountability
  • Develop effective HSE plans designed to meet operational goals to reduce injuries, accidents and incidents.
  • Strengthen and develop site safety professionals through core job dimensions
  • Develop and implement training programs to transfer HSE knowledge to management and associates
  • Develop and implement audits to track and identify gaps in local compliance with Sysco’s and SYGMA’s Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) policies and procedures.
  • Lead execution of the company’s annual HSE Plan, including distribution center specific action plans needed to support these efforts.
  • Assist in needed incident investigation process, including cause analysis and identification of corrective action plans.
  • Interface with regulatory bodies (OSHA, DOT, EPA, and State/Local Regulators) when necessary.
  • Ensure that required regulatory permits are acquired, that reports are submitted to regulatory agencies, and any site permit conditions (e.g. recordkeeping, PSM, storm water, special waste, etc.) are met.
  • Achieve annual targets for incident frequency, severity cost reductions.
  • Demonstrate strong employee relations, interpersonal and verbal/written communication skills.
  • Display strong problem solving, organizational and analytical skills.
  • Creates and facilitates HSE engagement through HSE teams and committees needed to accomplish the established targets and objectives for the year.
  • Drives and promotes zero incident HSE culture throughout the company.
  • Support execution of Sysco’s Emergency Preparedness Plan procedures and policies.
  • Support the installation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of the SYGMASafe process and strategies.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

 

 

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

This position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Safety or related field or a minimum of seven years’ experience in a safety role with demonstrated advancement in responsibility. Experience with OSHA, DOT, ergonomics, work-fit programs, On Board Computers, Smith System/defensive driving programs, and Emergency Crisis Management are required. Knowledge of behavioral based safety processes (Preferred Work Method’s), FDA, UDSA, and EPA, is preferred. Proficient with the Microsoft Office package and related computer programs is required.

 

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position is required to sit, stand, and walk for up to four hours at a time. Inspections require extended periods of walking, some climbing, and lifting. Visual inspection of facilities is required. This employee must be able to travel a minimum of 50% of their weekly schedule.
