POSITION SUMMARY

The Clinical Dietitian assures that quality nutritional care is provided to all patients and/or residents in the healthcare facility while maintaining all applicable agency and governmental regulations. 

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience:

Bachelor’s Degree in Dietetics or related field and one (1) year of experience in acute and/or long term care setting is required.  Must have computer experience using Microsoft Office software (Word & Excel), including the use of internet and electronic mail systems.  ServSafe certification is preferred. 

License:

Must be a Registered Dietitian by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.  If Registry Eligible, registration must be obtained within six (6) months of employment.  Must also be licensed or eligible for licensure in Mississippi and/or state location in which Valley conducts Health Services business. 

Competencies:                                 

  • Must have excellent written and verbal communications skills in order to communicate with all educational levels, including healthcare team members, patients, customers and employees
  • Must have the ability to direct employees to meet the goals and objectives of the unit
  • Must have the ability to read, write, and understand instructions and make judgments concerning policies, procedures and other communications
  • Must have the ability to perform all types of mathematical functions and measure proportions and quantities of food products
  • Must have strong knowledge and experience in using Microsoft Excel for reports and analysis
  • Must have knowledge of proper sanitation and food handling 

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL EFFORTS

Physical:

Physical demand level is light with 20 pounds being demanded occasionally.  Intermittent sitting and standing with wide freedom of movement.  Occasional lifting, bending, stooping, pushing and pulling.  Must be able to reach patient/resident medical records to document nutrition information.  Must be mobile to visit patients and/or residents.  Some travel by air or vehicle, including overnight stays, may be required. 

Mental:

Works with minimal supervision.  Concentrates for long periods of time.  Pays attention to details.  Requires independent action and decision making. Meets multiple deadlines.  Uses discretion and maintains confidentiality concerning employees, clients, patients, customers, and/or company business.   

ENVIRONMENTAL AND WORKING CONDITIONS

Environment is a modern healthcare production kitchen/facility.  Interacts with employees on a daily basis.  Works flexible hours as needed.  Spends most of the workday indoors. 

POSITION RELATIONSHIPS:

The Clinical Dietitian reports to the Food Service Director in conjunction with the Division Dietitian.  The Clinical Dietitian may have supervisory responsibilities over non-exempt employees. 

 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/STANDARDS OF PERFORMANCE

The position functions and duties described below may not be the only requirements of the position.  It may be necessary to follow other instructions or perform other related duties required by Valley Services, Inc.

  • Promotes the optimal nutritional status of patients and/or residents through ongoing assessment of the patient/resident's nutritional needs, planning of the nutritional goals and strategies, implementation of the nutritional care plan following the nutrition care process, and evaluation of the effects of the nutritional care provided to the patient and/or resident while complying with applicable  regulations
  • Plans, organizes, implements, and evaluates nutrition education for patients, residents, and/or caretakers; arranges for individual patient follow-ups
  • Serves as a liaison for the food services department between the patient and healthcare team while pursuing the continuous improvement of performance within the organization
  • Provides consultation for the ordering/purchasing of medical foods to assure the availability of specialized foods to patients and/or resident
  • Observes patient/resident tray line and service, collect and evaluates data, and documents opportunities for the improvement of patient/ resident food and service along with the Food Service Director
  • Develops short and long-range plans for delivering quality nutrition care service while containing costs; maintains personnel and training for dietetics section
  • Completes objectives as assigned in support of Valley’s annual business plan and assists with compliance of annual operating budget
