Work for the YMCA as a Day Camp Counselor! The main objective for this role is to provide a safe environment while supervising and managing the well-being of a group of 10-15 children. Responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Activities are reviewed in training and included in curriculum, but we want you to be creative and really engage children in activities through stories, singing, and games. Encourage creativity and intellectual curiosity by building on the child’s interests and talents.
  • Safety is number one. Your group of children should always be in sight and hearing range in case you need to move quickly for their well-being. Keep an accurate count of the children in the group each day and follow the field trip procedure set at staff training. We take a lot of fun field trips in the summer, but the trips are for the kids and our job is to keep them safe.
  • We want all our team members to be the best! Attend all training sessions and staff meetings. Follow pick-up and check-out procedures, discipline policies, and assist in set up and clean-up. Report supplies needed to the Camp Director. Report illness or injury of a child or team member to the Director immediately following any incident. In addition, report suspected child abuse to supervisor and fill out all documentation. These are all things we will go over in training.
  • Our parents are counting on us. We should always communicate with parents in a professional and positive manner. If you need to have a tough conversation with a parent, our Directors are there to help.
  • Have fun! We want our kids to WANT to come to camp and for parent’s to know their kids are in good care every day. Come to work each day knowing you are making an impact.

Hours: 6:30 AM – 6:30 PM (minimum 4 hour shifts during these hours)


  • 18+ years of age and High School graduate or equivalent.
  • We are outside for 80-90% of the day so candidates should be able to be outside and lead activities.
  • Be in the pool on swim days with your group of children.
  • Complete Safety Series Training 30 days from hire (First-Aid/CPR, Sexual Harassment, Child Abuse Awareness, and New Staff Orientation). You get paid for these very important trainings.
  • Candidates are required to have visual and auditory awareness as well as a pattern of circulating among the children. Must be able to lift and carry at least 30 lbs. as well as be capable of standing for long periods of time and adjusting from sitting to standing with ease.
  • Ability to manage multiple situations professionally and effectively.
  • Must be able comply with all state, federal and YMCA standards.
  • Ability to quickly move to attend to an injured or ill child (be able to lift or carry if necessary) and initiate first aid procedures.
