Job Description


Y Site Directors are dedicated to making sure camp is a safe and amazing experience for every camper, parent, and counselor. The main objective for this role is to provide a safe environment while supervising and managing the well-being of the children you are placed in charge at your site while coaching and empowering camp counselors to follow procedures and make camp a fun memory. 

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Opening and Closing duties (Signing in/out campers, greet/talk with parents, etc…), Follow pick-up and check-out procedures.
  • Assist in training and supervising the Assistant Camp Director and 10-20 part-time Camp Counselors, with the assistance of the Program Director.
  • Be responsible for the supply expenses and supply inventory/storage management as well as coordinating any grounds maintenance or upkeep.
  • Discipline policy as taught in staff training, and to assist in set up and clean-up of activities.
  • Ability to quickly move to attend to injured or ill child (be able to lift or carry if necessary) and initiate first aid procedures.
  • Keep an accurate daily count of the children in the group each day, and follow the field trip procedure set at staff training.
  • Supervision, safety and activities of children in an assigned group while ensuring the well-being of all children.
  • Must have basic computer skills and excellent communication skills including verbal and written.
  • Encourage creativity and intellectual curiosity by building on the child’s interests and talents.

 Hours of operation: 6:30 AM – 6:30 PM 




  • Must qualify for state license [Texas Department of Safety and Health Services (for YMCA Traditional Day Camps) or Texas Health and Human Services (for school-based camps)]. This link will provide more detailed information regarding the license:
  • Minimum age: 21 years of age; Education: High School Degree/ G.E.D. or higher.
  • At least 1-year previous experience as a member of an afterschool program, other recognized facility, or preferably a day camp with a Bachelor degree OR 2 years of full-time experience working in licensed childcare with at least 70 credit hours of training in child or youth development, recreational leadership or management without a Bachelor degree.
  • Must be able to be outside for 80-90% of the day with the ability to work outdoors and lead activities; including being in the pool on swim days.
  • Visual and auditory awareness as well as a pattern of circulating among the children. Must be able to lift and carry at least 30 lbs. as well as be capable of standing for long periods of time and adjusting from sitting to standing with ease.
  • Maintain a good relationship with the local YMCA personnel to ensure our community connection to that branch. As well as communicating effectively with parents and staff.

An ideal candidate for this role will possess:

  • Desire and ability to work with site staff and children.
  • Strong leadership skills, organizational skills, ability to multi-task, and ability to problem solve.
  • Ability to lead and supervise peers as well as participants in group activities, especially leading recreational activities.
  • Basic appreciation and understanding of group management and child development.
  • Ability to accept supervision and guidance.
  • Ability to creatively schedule programs, facilities, and staff.
