Under the general direction of the Head Teacher, the Teacher’s Aide works for the YMCA of Greater Hartford and is responsible for on-site activity leadership, working directly with children.  Must enjoy working with children, be a team player, be dependable and possess knowledge of positive behavior management techniques.

Provides a quality experience to children and parents that focuses on the YMCA values: honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Assist Teacher in the preparation and delivery of daily activities by completing assigned tasks.
  2. Actively participate with children in all activities and during play times, ensuring premier quality and innovation.
  3. Be responsible for clean-up and maintenance of toys and materials after each activity.
  4. Communicate immediately any problems or concerns with the program, staff, children or parents to immediate Supervisor.
  5. Maintain confidentiality of information provided by parents, staff and administration.
  6. Report immediately to supervisor any evidence of child abuse including physical, mental, emotional and/or neglect.
  7. Attend the minimum number of training hours per year as required by State law and/or accrediting agencies, as approved by supervisor.
  8. Consistently provide friendly, courteous assistance, exceeding customers’ expectations every day, which includes building and maintaining healthy professional relationships with parents, children, host agencies, and staff.
  9. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required.

PRINCIPLE ACTIVITIES:

The member relations aspect of this position requires that relationship building be the number one priority at all times, attending to the needs and requests of health seekers, members, and all people within the YMCA in a courteous and friendly manner.

 

  1. Be at least 16 years of age.
  2. Have experience working with children under 13 years of age, preferably in an organized setting.
  3. Bring to this position maturity, responsibility, and a sincere interest in working with children.
  4. Have very strong interpersonal and organization skills.
  5. Possess limited knowledge of various resources for programming ideas and the skills to utilize that information in assisting daily activities.
  6. Be creative with lots of energy and can inspire children to learn and grow.
  7. CPR, First Aid, AED certifications and Child Abuse prevention training within 30 days of hire date.
  8. Maintain current medical and tuberculosis health form. (Expires every two years)
  9. Incumbent will be required to be fingerprinted and have background checks conducted by the YMCA and the state.

 

 

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT:

  • Ability to supervise children by sight and sound at all times.
  • Ability to move quickly to react to safety issues in the setting (i.e. climbing, aggressive behavior).
  • Ability to remain calm, objective and respectful in potentially stressful situations (i.e. crying upset child, upset parent, or upset staff).
  • Ability to be flexible and willing to adjust to change.
  • Ability to move around the room to assist children and supervise children with daily activities, social interaction, physical and emotional needs.
  • Ability to lift young children and objects (food baskets and supplies) up to 40 lbs.
  • Ability to develop and foster cooperative relationships.
  • The ability to use hands, fingers, and arms as well as be able to talk and hear.
  • Should have good physical and mental health, and have the energy and emotional stability necessary to fulfill the responsibilities of their positions.
