Under the direction of the Head Teacher, the Assistant Head Teacher works for the YMCA of Greater Hartford and will assist the Head Teacher in the development, coordination, planning, administration, supervision, and delivery of the Child Development programming.

Provides a quality experience to children and parents that focuses on the YMCA values: honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring.   



  1. Works closely with the Head teacher to plan age-appropriate curriculum that will encourage guided and independent learning.
  2. Actively participate with children in all activities and during play times, ensuring premier quality and innovation.
  3. Ensure safety of children through constant supervision, effective arrangement of classroom space, proper maintenance of equipment, following all safety regulations.
  4. Manage the classroom environment to keep it safe, clean, organized and conductive to creativity and learning.
  5. Be responsible for clean-up and maintenance of toys and materials after each activity.
  6. Communicate immediately any problems or concerns with the program, staff, children or parents to the immediate Supervisor.
  7. Maintain confidentiality of information provided by parents, staff, and administration.
  8. Report immediately to supervisor any evidence of child abuse including physical, mental, emotional, and/or neglect.
  9. Display a positive attitude that is conducive to good public relations.
  10. Model the core values of the YMCA (caring, honesty, respect and responsibility) both in and beyond the classroom. 
  11. Wear proper identification and presentable clothing AT ALL TIMES.
  12. Expand job knowledge and skills by demonstrating a willingness to learn.
  13. Perform other related duties as assigned

          Besides safety, the main aspect of this position requires that relationship building be the number one priority at all times, attending to the needs and requests of health seekers, members, and all people within the YMCA in a courteous and friendly manner.

Minimum Requirements


The incumbent must:

  1. Possess an Associate’s degree in child development, early childhood education, elementary education, physical education, recreation or related field AND at least two years direct experience working with children in a developmental setting.
  2. Current Head Teacher Certification preferred.   
  3. Good role model, high integrity and adaptable.
  4. Be creative with lots of energy and can inspire children to learn and grow.
  5. Ability to communicate effectively with parents, children and co-workers.
  6. Possess a general knowledge and understanding of the YMCA, its goals, and its mission.
  7. Maintain current medical and tuberculosis health form. (Expires every two years)
  8. Incumbent will be required to be fingerprinted and have background checks conducted by the YMCA and the state.


Requirements for School Age:


  1. High School diploma required and 1 year experience working with children.
  2. Maintain current medical and tuberculosis health form. (Expires every two years)
  3. Incumbent will be required to be fingerprinted and have background checks conducted by the YMCA and the state.




Sufficient strength, agility and mobility to perform essential functions of the position and to safely supervise children’s activities.
